Weight Loss Medication

Weight loss medication also known as anti-obesity medications are agents that help cut weight. These drugs work by either altering the appetite, the metabolism or the absorption of calories. If dieting has not helped you lose weight, then this might be the route to take. Diet medication is not the complete solution but rather has to be complemented by a good diet and constant exercise. These anti obesity medications should be used by people who have been unable to lose weight through other methods or are experiencing health problems due to their weight. It is imperative to note that these pills are not to be used for cosmetic reasons.

The two reasons a doctor may consider when prescribing diet medication is if one has a body mass index of over 30 or has a body mass index of 27 and above and has health issues related to the obesity like high blood pressure or diabetes. The doctor has to look at what other drugs you are taking as well as your health history before prescribing diet pills. The diet medication has been known to reduce a person’s weight by 5 to 10 percent in one year. Though this may seem negligible, but any reduction in weight for an obese person will improve one’s health. This weight loss will only be achieved if combined with constant exercise and a good diet. One can also ask the doctor to recommend the kind of diet they should take so that they can move hand in hand with the medication.

This small reduction in weight can help the body in a number of ways which include, decreasing one’s blood pressure, decreasing blood glucose levels, increasing insulin sensitivity as well as decreasing the lipid levels. These anti obesity drugs have severe side effects which are related to their mechanism of action. These side effects include high blood pressure, palpitations, drug addiction, faster heart rate agitation and insomnia. When taking these anti obesity medications, it is very important to note that they do not work on everybody and if consumption is stopped then one is likely to regain most of the weight one lost.
